I'm about to buy my first indoor bike trainer. Is the Bell Motivator Mag Indoor Bicycle Trainer A Good Choice?

The Bell Motivator Magnetic trainer reminds me of my first indoor bike trainer. The difference was that my original wind trainer was exceptionally loud and you are looking at a magnetic trainer, which is usually a step up from a wind trainer.

Pros:
* Easy to setup right out of the box.
* Quality construction.
* One of the most inexpensive bicycle trainers on the market.
* Works well with both road and mountain bikes.
* Resistance increases as speed increase.
* 5 year manufacturer warranty

Cons:
* A little noisy if you are not used to an indoor bike trainer.
* Lack of resistance for some users.

Once you pull the trainer out of the box, you can have your bike setup on the trainer and be riding in a matter of minutes. I'm a little slow to figure things out sometimes and it took me about 10-15 minutes. I personally like the Bell Motivator Mag. What I do recommend is either watching TV or using an mp3 player while riding. If you are not used to riding an indoor bicycle trainer, the noise level (hum) may surprise you. For those that have been on indoor trainers before, you will find the Bell Motivator Mag makes less noise than wind trainers. If you will be putting on plenty of miles or riding a mountain bike, change out the rear tire and put a "slick" on your bike. This will help with the noise level.

I also recommend putting this trainer on a carpet or padded surface. If your only choice is to ride on a hard surface, I recommend picking up a trainer mat. As you've noted that you're about to buy your first indoor trainer, I'm assuming that you may not have been on a trainer before. So, you'll notice that this trainer will have your bike pointing slightly downhill. This happens when you raise the bike to attach it to the trainer. To level out your bike, the right solution is to purchase a riser block which you put under the front tire. Others (including myself in the past) use a book under the front tire. This will also help to relieve any extra stress that you may be placing on your hands/wrists.

All in all I think the Bell Motivator Mag is a great indoor bike trainer. Sure, it could make less noise and yes, it could offer a little bit more resistance but the price is right and with the proper motivation and training plan, this trainer will keep you in riding shape for many years to come.
