What Is A Bicycle Wall Mount?

What Is A Bicycle Wall Mount?

To describe it as simply as I can, a bicycle wall mount gets your bike(s) up off the ground, opens up room underneath, and safeguards anything that might be below your bike which is now hanging on the wall.

To give you an idea of what a bicycle wall mount looks like, here is the Topeak One Up Wall Mount Bike Hanger on the left hand side and the Delta Leonardo Single Bicycle Rack with Da Vinci Tire Tray on the right. Yes, sometimes these items are called a bike rack, a bike stand, or bicycle wall mount. You can hang your bike horizontally or vertically with a bicycle wall mount.

So, you can put it above a vehicle and it frees up the garage from overcrowding. It also benefits all bicycle and car owners from incurring any unnecessary damages.

Bicycle Wall Mount Frees Up Space

The bicycle wall mount takes up wall space but frees more space in the rest of the room by getting your bike off the ground. One way to safeguard your bicycle is to hang it in the corner of the garage. Of course not everyone has a garage, so look how your bike might hang up on a wall in your house.

Vertical Bike Wall Mount

There are companies making a bicycle wall mount  which allows for multiple bicycles to hang on a wall, whether the wheels  are horizontal or vertical. A bicycle can also be mounted using a bicycle wall mount or hooks from the ceiling. The bottom line is that your bike is not leaning against anything, you won't run your car into the bike as it sits in your garage, so again, it reduces the chance for damage.

Installing A Bicycle Wall Mount

The bicycle wall mount should be put into a stud (whether it is put in a garage or in the house) to make sure it is secure. You will most likely find the necessary hardware when buying one of these wall mount units where either foam or rubber covers the hook which lessens any type of damage to your bicycle. Many of these units are able to hold up to 40 lbs.... and I hope you aren't riding a 40 lb bicycle.

Still, make sure that the bicycle wall mount is put in such a place where you (or your kids) won't be banging your heads into the handlebars or wheels as it is now hanging on a wall.

Storing multiple bicycles in your garage takes lots of floor space. There is a high risk of knocking the bicycles over and pushing them into each other. This causes expensive damage to the bicycles and injury to anyone or anything standing nearby. So, do yourself a favor and check out Amazon and find the right bicycle wall mount for your situation.

What Accessories Do I Need With A Bike Trainer?

What Accessories Do I Need With A Bike Trainer?

I just purchased a bike trainer, set it up and have started riding. I love it but at the same time I feel like I might be missing out on any extras. I've got an mp3 player. Can you recommend any other bike trainer accessories?

I'm not exactly sure that you absolutely need any accessory with a bike trainer but I do have a few recommendations both for riding on your bike trainer and while out on the road.

#1. Riser Block
When normally riding a bike trainer, the bike leans forward at an angle. This happens because the back tire is off the ground. So what usually ends up happening is that you put pressure on your wrists and hands as you are holding the handlebars. So, what do you do about this? Well, years ago I used to put a phone book under my front tire to level off the bike. Nowadays, you can get a riser block which will help take that pain off your wrists. The nice thing about some of the riser blocks on the market is that they allow for different height levels to get you in the position that is comfortable for you.

#2. Bike Thong
Yes, the name is a little weird but a bike thong serves a very good purpose because it catches sweat. So, no need to worry about bike corrosion (yes, sweat contains salts) if you've got an um er thong, I mean bike thong.

#3. Training Mat
A bike training mat will help to protect your wood, laminate, or carpeting from getting grime/oil or any type of residue from your bike. It also helps to soften the blow of your ride, meaning to reduce vibration from the bike trainer. I would not use a training mat on thick carpeting but otherwise it is great for use in a condo (to drown out the noise of the bike trainer from disturbing those below you), and it can help your trainer from vibrating across the floor as you ride.

#4. Indoor Bike Trainer Computer
Most folks don't know that bike trainers require a different type of bike computer to get stats versus the bike computer that you might use in your outdoor riding. Let me re-phrase that. When riding a bike on an indoor bike trainer, you need a rear wheel sensor in order to display certain features. This is because the front tire is not moving.. only the rear tire. Unfortunately the selection of bike computers that offer a rear wheel sensor is very limited. The Cateye CC-RD200 Strada Cadence Bicycle Computer works well with bike trainers and has received very good overall reviews.

#5. Water Bottle
It almost goes without saying that you need to stay hydrated while riding either outdoor or on the bike trainer. For those of us who stay on the bike longer than 20 minutes (which is most of our audience), I recommend a Polar Insulated Water Bottle.

#6. Cycling Glove
Yes, I know we are riding indoors and won't have the same type of vibration as riding our bike outdoors but a cycling glove helps to soften the ride, plus you'll look really cool in some well fitted gloves.

#7. Cycling Shorts
Riding a bike is all about comfort and I don't see being in pain because you like wearing shorts or sweats while riding. Do yourself a favor and get some good cycling shorts. They are not only comfortable but on longer rides, they help to cushion your important parts.

I'm sure that I could rattle off a few other accessories that would be good to have for a bike in general. Like make sure you always ride with a patch kit. Don't ever leave home without a pump for your tires. A bike helmet is a must! All in all, riding is meant to be fun either on the road or while on your bike trainer. Make sure that you can be as comfortable as possible and I hope that maybe a few of these bike accessories might just help you to enjoy your ride!

Help! My Bike Computer Doesn’t Work With My Bike Trainer

Help! My Bike Computer Doesn't Work With My Bike Trainer

I just got a bike computer for my bike on Christmas. I've hooked it up to the bike but it doesn't work with my bike trainer. Whats wrong?

What most people don't know about bicycle computers is that you don't just place a unit on your bike, ride, and then see the different features (current speed, average speed, trip distance, total distance, cadence, etc..) without it being hooked up to one or more sensors. You will usually put a sensor by the crank near one of your pedals, so that the sensor notes every time you turn a revolution. Then you will have a sensor on the front wheel and as that wheel turns... wait a minute, on most standard bike trainers the front wheel does not turn. There lies the problem.

There are only a few bike computers on the market that work with a bike trainer. What you need when you want to use a bike computer on a standard bike trainer (not a roller trainer) is to have a rear sensor. Here is an example: Cateye CC-RD200 Strada Cadence Bicycle Computer. If you plan to do plenty of indoor and outdoor riding, you may as well pick up a bike computer that can handle both. If you'd rather go with a wireless computer, you may as go with a double wireless and get the Cateye CC-RD400DW Strada Double Wireless Cycling Computer. If you want a bike computer that can be used on a bike trainer and also shows watts, check out the Kurt Kinetic Wired Power Computer.

Kurt Kinetic Power Computer Review

Kurt Kinetic Power Computer Review

Interested in a power meter? Well, Kurt Kinetic has one and it is at an incredible price. There is an issue though. You must have a Kurt Kinetic bike trainer in order to use this power computer. In fact, the Kinetic Power Computers will only provide you with accurate power readings when you are riding a Kinetic Fluid Trainer. It comes in both wired and wireless versions and retails for $80 (wired) and $185 (wireless), although you can often find the Kurt Kinetic Power Computer at a discount at Amazon.

Do you know what kind of power you are producing?
Are you making progress on your indoor bike trainer?
Are you truly building fitness, endurance, strength, leg speed, and power?

Well, that is what a power meter is for and the Kurt Kinetic Power Computer helps to let you know how you are doing on the bike trainer.

Graeme Street, owner for cyclo-club.com dives into cycling power meters to hep you, the everyday cyclist decide if investing in one of these high tech devices is worth the money. Kurt Kinetic has an inexpensive option for us, but how does it stack up against other power meters?

On the positive side, you can use this power meter on or off the trainer. You'll be happy to find standard bike computer functions like the following:

* Speed
* 4 Keys
* Auto Start
* Max. Speed
* Speed bar (% of max. speed)
* Average Speed
* Speed Comparison
* Distance 1
* Distance 2
* ODO 1
* ODO2
* ODO 1+2
* Ride time 1
* Ride time 2
* Distance Countdown
* Time to arrival (arrival time/time remain)
* % to arrival (Bar display)
* 2nd Wheel size
* Time (12/24hr)
* Auto sleep
* Calorie expenditure / Fat burn
* Calorie
* Stopwatch
* Auto Lap (Time/Distance)
* Power
* Max Power
* Avg Power
* Temperature (C/F)
* Max Temperature
* Min Temperature
* Easy Caibration
* Service interval reminder
* EL Backlight
* Cadence
* Average Cadence
* Max Cadence
* Low battery indication

Again, the Kinetic Power Computer can only be used with a Kinetic fluid bike trainer. This power computer is specifically calibrated for Kurt Kinetic trainers. While the options and quality won't match up to a $500 or $1000 power computer, the Kinetic Power Computer does say that it is accurate within + or - 5%. I believe that even the more expensive power meters only guarantee accuracy within + or - 3%. Also, you will not be able to load data from this power computer to a computer via USB cable or any other device. It simply isn't an option. For the price, it delivers accurate power (watt) readings as follows:

Kinetic Power Formula along with proprietary software accurately estimates the cumulative effect of 16 different interactive forces. This power curve is based on the "average " rider on the "outdoor ride" using the following cubic function: P = (5.244820) * S + (0.01968) * S3. S=speed in miles per hour, P=power in Watts

Previously, if you had a 650c tri-bike or a recumbent, you were left out of being able to use a bike trainer. Kinetic offers a small wheel adapter (or is that adaptor?) which lets you use those small wheels on a Kurt Kinetic bike trainer. This adapter actually raises the resistance unit up to accommodate all wheel sizes from 16" to 22" which makes it adaptable to most BMX, kids and recumbent bikes.
