Best Selling Bicycle Trainers

The following best selling bicycle trainers are courtesy of Amazon.com. When comparing bike trainers, I like to look at both the number of reviews as well as the quality of those reviews. When looking at the following bike trainers, it is not always the highest review that is the most purchased. What is nice to see is that there is a good range of prices and the choice to choose between magnetic trainer, fluid trainer, wind trainer, and roller trainer.

Why Is My Bike Trainer Eating Up Tires?

February 4, 2011

Why Is My Bike Trainer Eating Up Tires?

I'm riding a bike trainer and what I'm finding is that the friction between the tire and the roller is ruining my rear tire. Is there something wrong with my trainer or my rear tire?

Most likely your trainer is perfectly fine. First of all make sure that your trainer is on level ground. A trainer that is not level will cause unevenness between the trainer and tire. I'm sure you've followed the setup correctly in putting the bike on the trainer. I know that with my wind trainer, you actually get the tire touching the roller but don't tighten it much past that. I know setup my bike on the trainer incorrectly before and you can literally smell rubber burning as you are riding.

Make sure your rear tire is properly inflated. For my rear tire, I'm running at around 100 psi. If I rode at 70 psi, I'm sure that the increased volume of tire on the trainers roller would cause undue friction. Next, what kind of tire is on the rear of your bike? If you are concerned about the type of ride that you get on your bike trainer, why not get a tire specifically made for trainers. Get a slick tire. Here are a few choices below. I hope I've helped you out.

Do Roller Trainers Give Any Resistance?

January 31, 2011

Do Roller Trainers Give Any Resistance?

When using a roller trainer, do you just pedal as you would on a straight road or do you get any resistance?

There are some roller trainers which do offer resistance and some that do not. Meaning, some have add-ons that you can purchase or they incorporate a form of resistance into the roller trainer itself. Minoura makes a roller trainer which states that it offers "natural resistance". So, change gears as you are riding and you will get resistance. Realize that if you've never been on a roller trainer before, there is a learning curve. As I've stated before in other blog posts, I watched a friend of mine fall off and ride into a wall. I'm not sure he could duplicate that again but many roller trainer newbies find themselves falling off and end up either off their bike or on the floor.

This guy actually does a very good job.

Some roller trainers offer resistance through a fan as in the model below. If you are looking for a slight increase in resistance from just changing the gears on your bike, this might be the way to go.

CycleOps joins the crowd and goes above and beyond with their aluminum roller trainer and it has received great reviews. As a benefit, it also has a lifetime warranty. Because CycleOps always thinks with the cyclist in mind (and to answer your question above), you can purchase a resistance unit which will give you 5 additional levels of resistance.

Indoor Bike Trainer Questions?

January 30, 2011

What's the average life on one of these things? I'm looking to get a magnetic trainer because I've heard that wind trainers are loud. Am I right? Also, I have a Trek mountain bike so I'm assuming I'll have to get training tires or road tires for the back, right?

You are right. Wind trainers can be loud. Quite loud. However, I have the opportunity to ride many bike trainers and from time to time I still choose to ride my wind trainer, the very first trainer that I got about 22 years ago. Yes, you read that right. I have been riding the same bike trainer (from time to time) for 22 years. My bike trainer cost about $70 at the time if I remember correctly. Yes, my wind trainer is loud.

I highly recommend magnetic trainers at the present time. Reason being is that they now come from a variety of manufacturers and you can find them under $100 and up to about $300. Bell Motivator Mag makes an excellent bike trainer as seen by both the number and quality of reviews. Then you have CycleOps with their progressive resistance Magneto model.

Yes, unless you are looking at rim drive trainers, you should replace your rear tire on your mountain bike. You will not only reduce tire wear but also vibration coming from the bike trainer itself. Having a slick rear tire theoretically will then prolong the life of your magnetic bike trainer.

How Much Should I Train On A Bike Trainer?

January 28, 2011

How Much Should I Train On A Bike Trainer?

I just started riding an outdoor bike seriously this past summer. I say seriously because I was putting in maybe 200 miles per week. I just bought a Bell Motivator Mag and I'm not sure how much I should be training on this bike trainer. I am 16 years old. Any recommendations?

Congratulations on your purchase by the way! The Bell Motivator Mag should work well for you. I don't think that there are any hard and fast rules regarding how much you should be training on your bike trainer. Here is how I look at it. At just 5 days per week riding the bike outdoors, you would be putting in about 40 miles per day. I say just 5 days per week because I used to ride 16 to and from work each day and then 18 miles to and from the gym each day. Boy it is nice to be young!

Which brings me to my next point. Like it or not, when you are younger it allows your body to recuperate faster than us older (I'm 45) folks. I used to compete in bodybuilding and powerlifting and would often do 16 sets per large bodypart. I feel like I get the same results doing 2 instense sets now.

Ok, back to the question at hand. When training on the bike trainer, you control where the hills are at, when you feel like going downhill, etc.. As I learned from riding with my buddy outdoors who competed in the Ironman, never stop pedaling. In other words, you control the intesity, gears, cardio, strength, endurance, and the timing of all of those, which cannot be controlled on an outdoor ride.

So, this is how I would approach riding on a trainer. If this is a winter thing and you have no option of riding outdoors, workout on your trainer about 5 days per week. This should allow your body time adequate time to recover. If you train in an intense manner, 30 minutes 5 days per weeks should be fine for both keeping your cardio in shape as well as increasing strength. If you would rather do long spinning workouts without much intensity, you can ride for up to 2 hours at a time. At this point it doesn't sound like you are competing in races, so there is no need to go on rides longer than 2 hours.

If you want specific workouts, I highly recommend you check out Indoor Training For Cyclists which will give you a variety of great workouts. Otherwise, you can do a search on my site where I've listed my workout routine.

A couple of additional things. You didn't mention whether you have a bike computer or heart rate monitor. I highly recommend both when either training outdoors or riding on your bike trainer. That way you can accurately track your miles. Make sure that you look at a bike computer that has a rear wheel sensor, such as the Cateye CC-RD200 Strada Cadence Bicycle Computer. This will work great when you are riding on the Bell Motivator Mag. Head over to Amazon to look at heart rate monitors.
