Best Selling Bicycle Trainers

Best Selling Bicycle Trainers

The following best selling bicycle trainers are courtesy of Amazon.com. When comparing bike trainers, I like to look at both the number of reviews as well as the quality of those reviews. When looking at the following bike trainers, it is not always the highest review that is the most purchased. What is nice to see is that there is a good range of prices and the choice to choose between magnetic trainer, fluid trainer, wind trainer, and roller trainer.

Beginner Rides A Roller Trainer

February 3, 2011

Bobby decided it was too hot out to ride his bicycle outside. He also was having trouble finding time to ride with his new stay at home dad gig. Now he can ride during nap time without leaving RJ home alone!

Roller trainers are a great way to keep road balance, although as you can tell by the video, its almost as if this cyclist is riding on ice. So, why would you want a roller trainer over a standard bike trainer? It requires more concentration and plenty of cyclists think that roller trainers are a heck of a lot less boring than riding a bike trainer. Some equate riding a bike trainer to riding an exercise bike. So, if you want to bring some fun back into your indoor training, check out the following roller trainer.

Do Roller Trainers Give Any Resistance?

January 31, 2011

Do Roller Trainers Give Any Resistance?

When using a roller trainer, do you just pedal as you would on a straight road or do you get any resistance?

There are some roller trainers which do offer resistance and some that do not. Meaning, some have add-ons that you can purchase or they incorporate a form of resistance into the roller trainer itself. Minoura makes a roller trainer which states that it offers "natural resistance". So, change gears as you are riding and you will get resistance. Realize that if you've never been on a roller trainer before, there is a learning curve. As I've stated before in other blog posts, I watched a friend of mine fall off and ride into a wall. I'm not sure he could duplicate that again but many roller trainer newbies find themselves falling off and end up either off their bike or on the floor.

This guy actually does a very good job.

Some roller trainers offer resistance through a fan as in the model below. If you are looking for a slight increase in resistance from just changing the gears on your bike, this might be the way to go.

CycleOps joins the crowd and goes above and beyond with their aluminum roller trainer and it has received great reviews. As a benefit, it also has a lifetime warranty. Because CycleOps always thinks with the cyclist in mind (and to answer your question above), you can purchase a resistance unit which will give you 5 additional levels of resistance.

Indoor Bike Trainer Questions?

January 30, 2011

What's the average life on one of these things? I'm looking to get a magnetic trainer because I've heard that wind trainers are loud. Am I right? Also, I have a Trek mountain bike so I'm assuming I'll have to get training tires or road tires for the back, right?

You are right. Wind trainers can be loud. Quite loud. However, I have the opportunity to ride many bike trainers and from time to time I still choose to ride my wind trainer, the very first trainer that I got about 22 years ago. Yes, you read that right. I have been riding the same bike trainer (from time to time) for 22 years. My bike trainer cost about $70 at the time if I remember correctly. Yes, my wind trainer is loud.

I highly recommend magnetic trainers at the present time. Reason being is that they now come from a variety of manufacturers and you can find them under $100 and up to about $300. Bell Motivator Mag makes an excellent bike trainer as seen by both the number and quality of reviews. Then you have CycleOps with their progressive resistance Magneto model.

Yes, unless you are looking at rim drive trainers, you should replace your rear tire on your mountain bike. You will not only reduce tire wear but also vibration coming from the bike trainer itself. Having a slick rear tire theoretically will then prolong the life of your magnetic bike trainer.
