Roller Trainer
I get a little bit of a chuckle when I think about a roller trainer. Well... I guess I'll get right to it. One of my best friends competed in triathlons. His strong point was definitely running as he did 4:50 miles but a very close 2nd was cycling. My roommate and I each picked up a wind trainer while my buddy got a roller trainer. Well, we headed over to my friends place one day while and caught him on his roller trainer while he was watching TV. I guess that between the TV and the distraction of us walking into the room, he not only went off the side of his roller but he ran straight into the wall. Oh, as a side note, my buddy went on to compete in the Ironman and was and still is an accomplished triathlete.
Roller Trainer For Balance
Roller trainers let you practice balance and riding a straight line which is something that you will not find with the wind trainer, magnetic trainer, or fluid trainer. For a first timer, this guy does an excellent job on his roller trainer although you can see he had some frightening moments when he first started out. My recommendation is to start close to a wall. There is also a fork mount that you can buy as an accessory which helps to maintain that balance.

Although my preference is to ride a fluid trainer, if you want a ride that keeps your balance and strength in the off-season, go with a roller trainer.
